Romania: digital economy could grow to 20% of GDP by 2025

Most realistic scenario 12%, 18-billion-euro value in six years

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 17 DIC - The digital economy sector in Romania could grow from the current 6.9% of gross domestic product, already above the average of Central and Eastern European countries (6.5%) to 20% of GDP by 2025, according to a 'best-case-scenario' illustrated in a report of the consultancy firm McKinsey.

"This could mean an extra percentage point on GDP growth each year over the period," McKinsey forecasted.

Under a more realistic growth scenario, Romania's digital economy would reach a share of 12% in country's GDP (18 billion euros) by 2025.

Romania has "strong foundations on which to accelerate its digitisation" with already "higher digitisation rates in the manufacturing as well as utilities and trade sectors," McKinsey noted.

McKinsey included Romania in the group of "digital challengers" that have strong potential for growth in the digital economy, together with Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. (ANSA).
