Almost 30% of Romanians cannot afford a car

High percentages also in Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 26 NOV - In 2017, almost 30% of Romanian citizens could not afford a car, the highest percentage in the European Union, Eurostat said today.

Romania, with 29.8%, was followed by other countries in Central- and Eastern Europe, including Bulgaria (20.6%), Hungary (20.1%) and Latvia (18.1%). High percentages of people not being able to afford a private car were registered also in Slovakia (11%), Estonia (10.4%), Lithuania (10.3%) and Greece (9.7%), all above the 7% average in the European Union in 2017. However, the share of people unable to afford a car decreased in almost all EU countries between 2016 and 2017. Major decreases were registered in Romania (-3.1%), Estonia (-1.7%), Latvia and Bulgaria (both -1.4%), Lithuania (-1.1%) and Slovakia (-1%).

Among the countries with the lowest share of people unable to afford a car, Slovenia, with only 3.6% of people in this condition. (ANSA).
