Poverty: strong decrease of risk in Poland, Romania,Bulgaria

But Sofia and Bucharest still at the top in Europe

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, OCTOBER 16 - Poland has registered the largest decrease in the European Union of the share of the population at risk of poverty or social exclusion between 2008 and 2017. According to new Eurostat data, released today, the at risk of poverty or social exclusion rate in Poland decreased from 30.5% to 19.5%, or -11 percent, in the last decade. Significant decreases were registered between 2008 and 2017 also in Romania (-8.5%), Latvia (-6.0%) and Bulgaria (-5.9%).

However, Bulgaria and Romania remained at the top in the EU for the share of population at risk of poverty in 2017. Eurostat said that more than a third were in this condition in Bulgaria (38.9%), Romania (35.7%) and Greece (34.8%), while the lowest shares of persons being at risk of poverty or social exclusion were recorded in the Czech Republic (12.2%), Finland (15.7%), Slovakia (16.3%), the Netherlands (17.0%), Slovenia and France (both 17.1%) and Denmark (17.2%).

In 2017, 112.9 million people (22.5% of the total population) in the EU were at risk of poverty or social exclusion, Eurostat noted. (ANSA).
