Labour: in Central, Eastern Europe lowest costs in the EU

But largest increase in Romania, Bulgaria and Baltic countries

(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 09 APR - Several Central- and Eastern EU member countries registered the lowest average hourly labour costs in the whole economy, excluding agriculture and public administration, in the EU in 2017, the statistical office Eurostat said today.

According to Eurostat, the lowest hourly labour costs in the EU in 2017 were recorded in Bulgaria (€4.9), Romania (€6.3), Lithuania (€8.0), Latvia (€8.1), Hungary (€9.1) and Poland (€9.4). Eurostat noted "significant gaps" among those member States and the ones with the highest labour costs, Denmark (€42.5), Belgium (€39.6), Luxembourg (€37.6), Sweden (€36.6) and France (€36.0).

In 2017, Eurostat said, average hourly labour costs were estimated at €26.8 in the EU and €30.3 in the euro area.

Several Central- and Eastern EU member countries recorded however the strongest increases in hourly labour costs between 2016 and 2017. Among the countries that recorded the largest increases in hourly labour costs between 2016 and 2017, Romania (+17.1%), Bulgaria (+12.0%), Lithuania (+9.0%), Estonia (+7.4%) and Latvia (+7.0%).

Labour costs consist of wages and salaries and non-wage costs, such as employers' social contributions.
