Kosovo: Dacic, 'dual sovereignty', unacceptable idea

Foreign minister, meeting in Berlin, a surprise to Brussels

19 April, 17:01
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 19 - The idea of dual sovereignty over northern Kosovo, as a proposal for a possible agreement between Belgrade and Pristina, is an unacceptable idea according to Serbia, said foreign affairs Minister Ivica Dacic. The minister referred to rumors circulating ahead of the 29 April regional summit convened in Berlin by Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron. Speaking on Serbian public television RTS, Dacic noted that such a solution would entail the recognition of Kosovo's independence. Thus, Serbia considers it ''an unacceptable idea''. According to Dacic, the Berlin meeting aroused ''big surprise'' in Brussels, and caused dissatisfaction in some countries, such as Austria and Italy, which are part of the 'Berlin Process' but were not invited to take part in it. According to Dacic, the Berlin meeting is not likely to put forward any proposal to resolve the Kosovo issue, but it will certainly put further pressure on Belgrade and Pristina to resume an EU-mediated dialogue. However, he added, ''to continue this dialogue it is necessary to lift tariffs on Serbian goods (increased by 100%), imposed by Pristina, ed), and this is the condition imposed by Serbia''. Dacic then pointed the finger at Germany: according to the minister, this country favored and accelerated the disintegration process of the former Yugoslav Federation.

According to the minister, in fact, in 1991 and 1992, Germany ''convinced'' all the other EU member states to recognize the secession and the proclamation of Slovenia's and Croatia's independence, even though all the other countries were in favor of a united Yugoslavia. (ANSA).
