Spain PM Rajoy only EU leader to miss EU-W.Balkans summit

Spain holds the line on Kosovo but will sign final declaration

(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, 15 MAG - The Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will not take part in the EU-Western Balkans summit scheduled for Thursday, 17th, in Sofia, due to the presence of Kosovo. A senior EU source confirmed the news after the latest rumors circulated on the Serbian press. The five EU countries that do not recognise Kosovo's independence are Spain, Greece, Slovakia, Cyprus, and Romania.

Rajoy will be the only Prime Minister of an EU country not to attend the summit. Spain will nevertheless be represented and has agreed to sign the final declaration of the 28 EU leaders, that will be published at the end of the summit.

The other four EU countries that do not recognise the Pristina's independence will be in Sofia with their respective Prime Ministers.

Madrid's position is linked to the possible effects that the recognition of Kosovo could have on the independence of Catalonia.(ANSA).
