Hungary: local elections on Oct. 13, big challenge for Orban

According to polls, Fidesz could lose many cities

(ANSA) - BUDAPEST, 29 JULY - The local elections will be held in Hungary on October 13. The date was set by the head of state.

At the latest local elections, the whole country became "orange" (the color of Fidesz, Viktor Orban's party), since the opposition candidates competed with each other, and the Fidesz candidates won almost everywhere. This time all the political parties have drawn up an agreement to present only one mayoral candidate in each city. In Budapest, Gergely Karacsony, a representative of a small Green group, was selected through primary elections. He will try to defeat Istvan Tarlos, the mayor close to Orban. Karacsony will be supported by all parties, including the socialists and the Jobbik (right-wing nationalists). In most county seats, 19 out of 23 cities, common opposition candidates have already been found. According to some analysts, Fidesz could lose a lot of cities, including Budapest. This would be the first serious defeat for the government led by Orban, which has been ruling since 2010. (ANSA).
