(ANSA) - UDINE, OCT 19 - The confrontation between sovereignty and the reasons of the European Union was the focus of the 14th International Forum of the Aquileian Euroregion, held in Udine today, "Europe betrayed. Illusions and disillusions", attended by numerous MEPs and diplomats from the New Europe area, organized by the Mitteleuropa association, chaired by Paolo Petiziol. The event was also attended by the regional councillor of Friuli Venezia Giulia for Finance, Barbara Zilli. "Europe must start from the appreciation of the diversity of its peoples that compose it, from that unity in diversity, which was the dream of the founding fathers and the concept that our region embodies," she said. Among the participants in the discussion panels, some MPs.

"The European elections next year will be crucial - said Attila Tilki, Hungarian MEP member of the ruling party led by prime minister Orban - because European politicians should finally understand that we must not only talk about people's problems, but we must try to really understand the citizens' needs and try to meet them. In Hungary ,for example, people think it is very important to preserve our national cultural heritage".

According to long-standing Slovak MP Josef Miklosko (Christian Democrats), former ambassador to Rome, "it is essential to recover our common Christian roots when dealing with the fundamental values". As for the Italian government, Miklosko described himself as "optimistic", because "maybe they will be able to put in place something new even in the context of people's claims to Europe, precisely with respect to their fundamental values". According to MEP Martina Dlabajova (Liberal), from the Czech Republic, "putting together sovereignty and the reasons for Europe's unity is necessary, because the same institutions are asking us to do so: in Europe there are all the tools to achieve balance, such as the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission, which are entities that embody democratic values". The president of the Region, Massimiliano Fedriga, greeted the international conference, recalling "the duty to assume the burden of precise choices, aimed at restoring legitimacy to international organizations and at the same time filling the gap of democracy".
