Macedonia: Minister Ademi, EU referendum will be successful

Name change to enter the EU. 'I know Italy will support us'

14 September, 12:08
(ANSA) - TRIESTE, SEPT. 14 - ''The referendum will be successful, because Macedonia has no alternative but to join the EU'', said the Minister for the Diaspora of the Republic of Macedonia, Edmond Ademi, on the sidelines of his visit to the Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia, talking about the referendum for the change of the name of the State from Macedonia (Fyrom) in Republic of Northern Macedonia, a compromise solution with Greece to end decades-old dispute with Athens. The referendum will take place on September 30.

The president was welcomed by the Speaker of the FVG Regional Council, Piero Mauro Zanin, and his deputy, Francesco Russo, who talked about potential collaborations with the republic.

With regard to the growth of far-right parties in EU countries, Ademi said that he was ''not worried'' about the prospect that this rise could ''block the path of enlargement of what I would call a big family. I am also confident - he added - that Italy will support our path of integration regardless of the political colour of the government''.

''We have many immigrants in this region - the minister explained - and it is important to create partnerships between the institutions''. This issue was also highlighted by President Zanin: ''The relationship with the Balkans and Eastern Europe has a long history: Friuli Venezia Giulia is on your side and I consider your country already a member of the Union''.
