Macedonian parliament ratifies name deal with Greece

President will not sign the agreement. Referendum in autumn

20 June, 15:32
(ANSA) - SKOPJE - Macedonia's parliament has ratified a deal with Greece signed last weekend to end a decades-long dispute over Macedonia's name. Lawmakers on Wednesday approved the bill that renames the country "North Macedonia", with 69 votes in favor in the 120-member parliament.

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev told lawmakers that Skopje and Athens have reached a "dignified and acceptable" agreement for both countries. The Conservative president Gjorgje Ivanov has already said, however, he does not intend to sign the ratification agreement, which he considers unconstitutional and harmful for the country. In the autumn the document will be submitted to a referendum. (ANSA).
