Greece: top court froze Enel's wind farms project

Local environmental group against Ministry of environment

17 August, 17:13
(ANSA) - TRIESTE - The Greek Council of State issued temporary orders blocking a project by Enel Green Power Hellas to construct a cluster of eight wind farms and 73 wind turbines, Ibna said. The project represents the largest wind farm in the country and would take place in the area of Kafireas, on the southern part of Greece's Evia island, in the municipality of Karistos.

The case against the Ministry of environment and its decision to start the investment was brought before the court by a local environmental group and three local residents. According to their claims, the eight wind farms will be built in a forested area included in the Natura 2000 ecological network, designated as a site of communal importance and a special protection area for avifauna.

The Ministry has approved the company's environmental conditions for the wind farms in question, as well as the environmental conditions for their construction and operation.

The eight wind parks would install 73 wind turbines to produce 167.9 MW, the construction of a 20 MW underground grid and the construction of three power stations of 150 kV at the locations of Amygdalea, Antia and Platanistos in Karistos.
