Germany: Constitutional Court ruled inadmissible AFD appeal

Against cancellation of some candidates in regional elections

24 July, 13:41
(ANSA) - BERLIN, JULY 24 - The German Constitutional Court ruled inadmissible the appeal of the AFD of Saxony against the cancellation - ruled by the electoral commission - of a large part of its candidates in the coming regional elections. The elections will take place on September 1. The State Constitutional Court in Leipzig is now expected to make another decision on the same issue.

The Karlsruhe judges ruled inadmissible the appeal filed by the AFD due to the lack of numerous formal elements. If the State Constitutional Court of Saxony-Anhalt rejects the appeal filed by the right-wing populists, in Saxony only the first 18 candidates in the list for regional elections will be able to run for the AFD. This list, in the beginning, included 61 candidates. This means that if the populist party achieves a remarkable result in Saxony (the party is currently leading in the polls, head-to-head with the CDU), it will however not be able to elect more than 18 MPs.(ANSA).
