Brenner: tug of war between Berlin and Vienna over trucks

Germany opposes a quota system' for trucks in Tyrol

04 June, 11:22
(ANSA) - BOLZANO - Tug of war between Berlin and Vienna ahead of the trilateral summit on freight traffic along the Brenner axis, scheduled for June 12 in Bolzano/Bozen. Germany strongly opposes the quota system for trucks on the busiest days along the Inntal motorway in Austria.

The measure is supported by the Tyrolean governor Guenther Platter. ''Germany - he told the Tiroler Tageszeitung - must take note of the fact that measures to move freight traffic to railways are now inevitable. It is not logical to oppose restrictions on critical days and at the same time cause permanent queues due to border controls''.

In the first few months of 2018, the number of trucks at the Brenner pass has increased by 13%. Much - according to the daily newspaper - will depend on the views of the new Italian minister Danilo Toninelli. Austria is hoping, however, that Toninelli will confirm in Bozen the orientation of his predecessor, Graziano Delrio. (ANSA).
