Germany: composite PMI index rises to 55.3 points in April

Improvement after slowdown at the beginning of the year

23 April, 13:30
(ANSA) - ROME, APRIL 23 - The German economy shows an unexpected improvement in April after the slowdown recorded at the beginning of the year. The composite PMI output index - which tracks business trends across both manufacturing and service sectors - rose to 55.3 points from 55.1.

This preliminary estimate is better than the economists' predictions - a fall to 54 points - confirming a good ''solid start'' in the second quarter, Markit Economics underlined. ''The growth of the German private sector became stable in April, after decreasing in February and March'', explained Phil Smith, economist at Markit, ''however, a further slowdown in orders raises concerns.''
