Fake news: study, Balkans among most vulnerable in Europe

Due to mediocre performance in education, partially free media

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 30 MAR - The majority of the countries in the Balkans and in Southeast Europe are the most vulnerable to 'fake news' in Europe, according to the study 'Media Literary Index', made public by the Open Society Institute - Sofia.

The study has analyzed the resistance potential to fake news in 35 European countries, using as reliance indicators factors such as media freedom, education and trust in people.

The 'Media Literary Index' for 2018 has highlighted that countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe have the lowest results, due to "poor or mediocre performance in education as well as controlled (not free) media, on a 0-100 scale, which indicates which countries are better equipped to resist to the fake news phenomenon.

At the bottom of the ranking Macedonia (10 points), Turkey (16), Albania (22), Bosnia and Herzegovina (25), Montenegro (28), Bulgaria (30), Serbia (31), Romania (38), Greece (39), Hungary (40), Cyprus (43), Croatia (44), Malta (47), Slovakia (48).

On a better position, among the countries more resilient to fake news, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Poland (55), Latvia (56), Austria and Slovenia (60), and Germany (62).

Italy got 50 points in the Media Literary Index'. At the top, Finland (76), Denmark (71), the Netherlands (70), Sweden and Estonia (69), and Ireland (68).(ANSA).
