Germany: Schulz, talks with CDU at the beginning of new year

Meetings expected to end in the second week of January

15 December, 19:38
(ANSA) - BERLIN - The talks to build a potential Grosse Koalition between SPD and the Union will start ''at the beginning of January'', and they should end in the second week of January. Martin Schulz reported, answering a question at a press conference held at the Willy Brandt Haus.

Schulz explained that another meeting of the party's leaders is scheduled for December 20, and a 'monastery meeting' is going to take place on January 11. The leader of the Social Democrats has also announced a commission made up of 12 people to tackle the talks.

With a ''constructive'' attitude, but in dealing with the talks the SPD is not bound to produce a tangible result, and does not rule out even other solutions, beyond the Grosse Koalition, said Schulz, confirming that the party's assembly has unanimously voted to start exploratory talks with Angela Merkel's Union in order to form a government.
