Noise nuisances,17.9% of Europeans are affected, one in five

Eurostat: number twice as high in cities compared to countryside

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - Almost one in five European citizens suffer from noise coming from the street or made by neighbours: percentages are twice as high for those living in cities compared to those living in the countryside, and decrease depending on the number of people living in the house.

Italians are below the EU average for the annoyances caused by the loud noises. These data were released by Eurostat for 2016. According to these data, 17.9% of Europeans are affected by noise pollution: 23.3% in urban areas and 10.4% in rural areas. On the other hand, Italians suffering from noise disturbances are 16.2%, while they were 18.3% in 2015.

The countries where the highest percentages of noise complaints were recorded - that is about one in four people - are Malta (26.2 %), Germany (25.1%) and the Netherlands (24.9%), followed by Portugal (23.1%), Romania (20.3%), Greece (19.9%) and Luxembourg (19.7%) %). The most 'silent' state, with the lowest number of 'noise disturbances' is Ireland (7.9%), followed by Croatia (8.5%), Bulgaria (10%) and Estonia (10.4%).

At EU level, 'single people' are more sensitive to noise, with 20.8%. (ANSA).
