Agriculture: Austria leading in EU for organic farming share
Low quota in Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania
31 January, 19:00According to the data published by Eurostat, among EU member States the countries with the largest shares of organic area in 2017 were Austria (23.4% of total utilised agricultural area), Estonia (19.6%) and Sweden (19.2 %), followed by Italy (14.9%), Czechia (14.1%), Latvia (13.9%) and Finland (11.4%).
The share of organic agricultural areas was below the EU average of 7% in several countries in Central- and Eastern Europe, including Germany (6.8%), Croatia (6.5%), Hungary (3.7%), Poland (3.4%), Bulgaria (2.7%) and Romania (1.9%). The total organic area in the European Union (EU) was 12.6 million hectares in 2017, with an increase of 25% since 2012, Eurostat said. (ANSA).
