Smog: Vella, no more delays, states should take action now

New measures to be presented Monday, dialogue continues

31 January, 13:24
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - ''We cannot keep delaying, there is no new deadline'' for member states to comply with air quality, said EU Commissioner for the Environment Karmenu Vella after Tuesday's meeting attended by Italy, France, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, all the countries that go beyond the EU limits. ''If the countries have new measures to put on the table they should present them by Monday'', since ''we do not exclude to continue dialogue'' but, he warned, ''the only thing that will keep the Commission from going to the EU Court is what the countries will put on the table in order to reach the targets without delays''.

''The deadlines have passed - he added -, we cannot postpone action'', since ''without new and effective measures, the limits will continue to be overcome'', warned the EU manager, asking member states to ''tackle the problem with absolute urgency'', otherwise the referral to the European court of justice will be inevitable.
