Czech Republic: elections, run-off today and tomorrow

Head to head between Zeman and Drahos, running for president

26 January, 15:24
(ANSA) - PRAGUE, JAN 25 - Today and tomorrow, 8.4 million Czech voters will be going to the polls to decide who will be the new president of the republic. The two contenders are the outgoing president Milos Zeman and scientist Jiri Drahos.

Czech media speak of a choice between the pro-Eastern orientation, represented by Zeman, or pro-Western, represented by Drahos.

The latest polls give Zeman 45.5% and Drahos 45%, and agree that the winner will be determined by 10% of voters who are still undecided, the turnout, and the vote of Czech citizens abroad.

In the first round Zeman gained almost two million votes (35.56%), Drahos about 1.4 million (26.60%), but he will get the majority of the votes of the four candidates who did not pass in the first round and expressed support for Drahos (about 1.7 million votes). Zeman is supported by the Ano movement led by the outgoing premier Andrej Babis, the extremists of Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) and the Communists (KSCM). On the side of Drahos are all the centre-right parties (OCD Civic Democrats, conservatives of the Top 09, popular Kdu - Csl, the Stan mayors) and the Pirates. Social democrats (CSSD did not give any indication of a univocal vote. The two-week campaign between the first round, held on 12 and 13 January, and the run-off was marked by a great activity by Zeman's followers. The on-line and traditional media have been invaded by 'attacks' against Drahos, urging to to elect Zeman in order to ''stop Drahos and migrants''.

Polling stations across the country will be open today from 2 to 10pm, tomorrow from 8am to 2pm. The results will be published tomorrow evening. (ANSA).
