Hungary: Orban launches memorandum to move PPE to the right

He wants to ally with Salvini's Lega and German AFD

21 February, 12:36
(ANSA) - BUDAPEST, FEBRUARY 21 - Hungary's populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban wants to move the European People's Party (EPP) towards the right, and thus proposed to ally with right-wing parties, such as Matteo Salvini's Lega, in a memorandum published by the Mti agency and also launched on Facebook.

According to Orban, the EPP is losing consensus and influence, getting closer to the liberal and leftist parties, "there is almost no difference anymore, Christian values are being lost," "It is a mistake - Orban wrote - and the solution would be to form alliances in the European Parliament, but also in national parliaments, sometimes even with right-wing parties." The memorandum does not mention any name, but according to Budapest government sources, Orban is thinking of Italy's Lega and Germany's AFD. The EPP Zagreb Congress did not lead to an open discussion on the line to follow, again according to Orban, and the elected president, Donald Tusk (Polish) "is unsuitable for office," as "he brings Poland's internal politics matters into the EPP."
