(ANSA) - BELGRADE, DECEMBER 27 - The Bulgarian Defense ministry and the Economy ministry have proposed to the government to ask for a mandate from Parliament to begin talks with the United States for acquisition of new F-16 fighter jets for the Bulgarian air force, the specialized portal SeeNews reports.

"The acquisition of new multipurpose fighters from the U.S., equipped with the latest generation radar and weaponry, will significantly improve the combat capabilities," Defense minister Krasimir Karakachanov said. SeeNews recalled that the US, Sweden and Italy have responded to Bulgaria's request for proposals for supply of fighter jets, in order to replace Soviet-made combat aircraft last October. In June, Sofia decided to acquire new Nato-compatible aircrafts in two stages, with the first envisaging the purchase of eight jets for a value of almost one billion euro. (ANSA).
