Bulgaria: first case of African swine fever detected in wild

Dead animal found near the Romanian border

24 October, 20:37
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, OCTOBER 24 - The Bulgarian authorities have detected the first case of African swine fever (ASF) in a wild board found dead near the village of Kaynardzha, few kilometers from the border with Romania.

The dead wild pig was discovered next to the wire fence built along the border to stop the spreading of ASF from neighbouring Romania, Radio Bulgaria reported. The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency confirmed the presence of ASF in the animal. Radio Bulgaria informed that authorities have begun implementing all measures to prevent the spread of the disease in the area.

At the beginning of October, the Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture Rumen Porozhanov informed the Parliament that just one case of outbreak of African swine fever among domestic pigs had been detected in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria has finished erecting a 133-kilometers long fence on the border with Romania in August, to prevent the spreading of ASF. (ANSA).
