Bird flu: H5N8 outbreak in a farm in northeast of Bulgaria

Near the Romanian border, authorities announced countermeasures

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 05 MAR - The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has reported today an outbreak of H5N8 bird flu in a poultry farm in General Toshevo, in the northeast of the country. The Agency said that the national authorities, in line with the European standards and legislation, will have to cull 140,000 hens and properly dispose them. In the meantime, a three-kilometer protection zone and a 10-kilometer surveillance area have been set up around the farm. Furthermore, the authorities have introduced a ban on trade and transport of poultry and eggs in the area. (ANSA).
