Bosnia: agreement on Belgrade-Sarajevo highway route reached

Map will be sent soon to Turkey, which supports the project

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MARCH 1 - Authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina have agreed this week on the final route through Bosnia of an important highway that will connect Sarajevo with the Serbian capital Belgrade.

Previously, Bosnia's two political entities - Republika Srpska (RS) and the Federation (FBiH) - have pushed for routes that would pass the most through their own territories, but a solution has been finally reached, said the current Chairman of the Bosnian Presidency, Milorad Dodik, the N1 regional TV reported.

The route will be drawn on the map of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the next days, approved by the Presidency and sent to Turkey, which supports the project, Dodik said.

One branch of the highway will enter Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Raca border point, and then proceed to Bijeljina, Brcko, Tuzla, Zepce and Sarajevo. The second branch will start from Sarajevo and will lead towards Pale, Rogatica and Visegrad. The idea of a 'circular' highway was adopted to win the initial resistances of RS and FBiH. After the two regions "failed to agree on one of two possible options" of connecting Sarajevo with Belgrade, "Turkey said it would finance the construction of both routes," N1 recalled last September.

The value of the project is estimated at around three billion euro. (ANSA).
