Freight traffic: 82 trucks to Italy blocked at the Brenner

Austria 'sent them back' pursuant to ban on transit to Germany

30 July, 16:57
(ANSA) - BOLZANO/BOZEN, JULY 30 - The Austrian police blocked 82 trucks from entering to Italy at the Brenner on Saturday. The decision was made pursuant to a ban on transit to Germany, which came into force Saturday at 7am. Over the past three weeks, 500 trucks were stopped and sent back to Italy. Only six trucks were caught Saturday in their attempt to move from Germany to Italy. The ban had come into effect in a southerly direction so far but this summer it was also extended to the northerly direction, from 7am to 3pm, when the 'usual' weekend ban enters into force.

Trucks heading to Tyrol are not subject to any ban. The measure is explained as an adaptation to the prohibition already in force in Germany, which will come into force on Saturday at 7am. ''In this way, in the days of heavy traffic, we avoid the Inntal motorway being blocked by parked trucks'', Tyrolean governor Guenther Platter recently explained. (ANSA).
