(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - NOV 20 - The EU Commission cleared the
cooperation agreement between Serbia and Frontex, the European
Border and Coast Guard Agency, to cope with migration and crime
along the EU's external borders. The deal was signed today in
Skopje, on the sidelines of the EU-Western Balkans Forum on
Justice, in the presence of the European Commissioner for
Migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, the Serbian Interior Minister
Nebojsa Stefanovic, and his Finnish counterpart Maria Ohisalo,
who holds the EU presidency.
The agreement calls for Frontex troops to be deployed on the
border between Serbia and EU member countries and to carry on
joint operations against illegal migration and cross-border
crime, particularly in the event of sudden peaks in migration
flows.
The final word on the entry into force of the agreement will lie
with the European Parliament. Similar cooperation agreements
between Frontex and the Western Balkans have already been signed
with Albania and Montenegro, whereas agreements with Macedonia
and Bosnia and Herzegovina are being finalized. (ANSA).
