Show in store at WGC Mexico Championship

Molinari, Woods among contenders

Redazione ANSA Rome

(ANSA) - Rome, February 21 - The 2019 WGC Mexico Championship starting Thursday through Sunday is set to be a show with top players competing in the first of four tournaments that are part of the World Golf Championship, the circuit that is second in importance only to major championships.
Francesco Molinari is hitting the green again and Tiger Woods will be competing for the first time in Mexico City.
Top players, except for world leader Justin Rose, will be competing at the Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City.
Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson (the winner in 2017), respectively number two and three in the world ranking, will compete for the top spot.
Italy is ready to dream again with Molinari in his first great event of 2019 after a 2018 that saw him rise to the very top. The only Italian player in the competition, the Race to Dubai champion is back in shape after the flu forced him to skip the Genesis Open (PGA tour).
Expectations are high also for Woods, who will be playing for the first time at the Club de Golf Chapultepec in a tournament which he has already won seven times in his career.
He has won a total of 18 WGC titles, 13 more than any other player.
Phil Mickelson will be defending the 2018 title.
Potential winners include Justin Thomas, after a second spot in the Genesis One, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler. Major contenders are also Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter.
Top players will be vying for a win in Mexico City in the first leading event of 2019 with Mickelson set to play beside Johnson and Thomas in the first two days of competitions.
Woods will face DeChambeau and Abraham Ancer while Molinari will compete with Schauffele and Thorbjorn Olesen.
