(ANSA) - Rome, June 22 - American golf champion Hubert Green
died on Tuesday at age 71, following a long battle with throat
cancer.
Green is the second golf great to die this month, just one
day before the death of Australian five-time Open champion Peter
Thomson at 88 on Wednesday.
Green became a professional golfer in 1970, the year after he
was named Rookie of the Year, and he was inaugurated into the
World Golf Hall of Fame in 2007.
He had 29 triumphs on the green, including 19 in the PGA
Tour.
He appeared three times at the Ryder Cup, and was admired for
his incredible swing.
Among his most important wins was that of the 1977 US Open.
