(ANSA) - Rome, October 2 - The Ryder Cup is the most
important and prestigious golf exhibition in the world. The
players play for glory alone: with no monetary prize at stake,
there's only the cup and the honour of victory up for grabs. In
the event, the United States and Europe face off, and it's the
only sporting competition in which the Old Continent plays as a
team.
It's played once every two years and alternates between an
American city and a European one. On December 14, 2015, Italy
was awarded the right to host it in 2022. The competition is
planned for Rome and the official headquarters of the game will
be the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.
Why the Ryder Cup 2022 can be a great deal for Italy - After
the "no" to the 2024 Olympics (which will take place in Paris),
the Ryder Cup 2022 has become for Italy an essential event not
only for the future of golf but for sport in general. Few people
know that this is the third most-followed sporting event in the
world, following only the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup.
The event attracts roughly 300,000 spectators from more than
60 countries and is broadcast live by more than 50 stations in
200 countries with 600 million viewers. It's also, and above
all, an advertisement for Rome, which can count on a definite
increase in tourism during the competition.
The economic impacts - In the period between 2016 and 2027,
the economic impact of the Ryder Cup will be about one billion
euros. In particular, 500 million euros will come from projected
proceeds, (274.4 will be tied to direct effects of increased
domestic demand, 83.9 from growth in tax revenue, and another 26
from tax revenue related to tournament prize jackpots).
The project - There will be 129 events in the course of 11
years, with 11 editions of the Italian Open, 88 competitions on
the Italian Pro Tour, and 30 events on the Road to Roma 2022.
Job opportunities and GDP growth - Celebration, pride,
showcasing and patriotism - but also job growth.
According to the numbers from Chaska, the Minnesota city that
hosted the event in 2016, it brought 54.8 million dollars in
business transactions, 9 million dollars to the hotel sector
with requests for 43,000 overnight stays, 5.2 million dollars in
transport revenue, 5 million in revenue for stores and another 5
million for entertainment. Above all, the event brought 11,000
temporary jobs, which means that there are margins for GDP
growth that could contribute to the country's economic recovery.
With the necessary optimisation of resources and avoidance of
waste, Italy can get the ball in the hole.
