Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero
Milanesi said on Venezuela Wednesday that "the European Union,
with the full support of Italy, has always insisted on five
points: the full restoration and respect for the powers of the
national Assembly, that credible presidential elections be
called, the release of all political prisoners, the full
guarantee of freedom of information and expression, and the
opening of humanitarian corridors".
Moavero said Italy "fully sees itself in the EU declaration
of Saturday 26, a position that reaffirms the objective of
arriving at free, democratic and transparent elections".
"We recognise ourselves also in a term of days within which
the elections must be called, although the number of days is not
specified in the EU declaration".
The South American country is in the throes of a crisis
caused by a standoff between President Nicolas Maduro and
opposition leader Juan Guaidò.
