Brazilian police on Friday captured a suspect in the stabbing death of Italian businessman Alberto Baroli, who was murdered in the course of a robbery the villa he had rented with his wife in the town of Beberibe in northeastern Brazil last Monday.
Baroli, 51, was from Milan but resided in Paris.
Tiago dos Santos, 26, was arrested after a police search of his home turned up several objects belonging to the victim.
The suspect's 16-year-old girlfriend turned herself in hours after the crime, while police arrested 27-year-old Damiana Pavia da Silva hours after investigators found Baroli's body. Police are seeking three more accomplices, named as Emanuel Alfredo Moreira Alves, Gilmar Paiva de Morais and Francisco Iarleuy Ferreira de Queiroz. De Morais delivered the fatal blows with a kitchen knife. He is a defendant in two robbery trials and wears an electronic bracelet, police told a press conference.
The criminals locked Baroli's wife in the bathroom while he tried to stop the robbers, who escaped with the victim's iPhone, a notebook and about 5,000 euros in cash.
An Italian officer from Criminalpol's International Police Cooperation Service is participating in the investigation.
