(ANSA)- Moscow, December 17 - Russian Premier Dmitri Medvedev
called an emergency meeting on defending the Rouble Wednesday,
saying the beleaguered Russian currency is undervalued.
In addition to economy ministers, the Russian Central Bank
head Elvira Nabiullina, tax authorities and the heads of major
energy exporting firms were summoned to the meeting at the
premier's residence in Gorki, officials said.
Medvedev said that the rouble "is undervalued today" and its
exchange rate "does not reflect the current situation of the
economy," adding that "it makes no sense to impose an extremely
rigid regulation in this sphere" and expressing the wish that
moves to resolve the undervaluation will be "based on market
mechanisms".
Medvedev insisted that Russia "has the necessary reserves to
achieve all its economic and political objectives".
