Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti,
president of the Italian Bishops' Conference (CEI), on Wednesday
voiced concern over a budget clash between Italy and the
European Union and said dialogue with the EU was essential.
"I'm concerned because I'm certainly thinking of the present,
and the intentions are good, but I'm also thinking of the
future," Bassetti said at a Migrantes meeting in Rome.
"They will have to take into account some suggestions to
improve this budget".
The European Commission on Tuesday took the unprecedented
step of rejecting a member State's budget and said Rome must
present a revised draft in three weeks' time.
Bassetti added: "I hope that on all sides there is a spirit
of collaboration, especially in this moment dialogue is
necessary also with Europe".
