The Augustinian friars
convent in the Sicilian town of Gela is closing after 577 years
due to a lack of people taking up the vocation, daily newspaper
Il Giornale di Sicilia reported on Monday.
The convent's two friars Father Francesco Calleya and
Father Giuseppe Ribaldone will move to their new posts in
Cascia, near Perugia, and Rome on Monday after their last Mass
on Sunday.
The historic building in Gela's Piazza Sant'Agostino will
be transformed into a dormitory for the poor, the daily
reported.
