New, energy-saving
Led lighting on the facade of St Peter's Basilica was switched
on Friday at the same time as the lights on a towering Christmas
tree erected in St Peter's Square and the opening of the
Vatican's Nativity creche.
Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello presided over the illumination
ceremony, thanking in the name of Pope Francis the region of
Calabria for the tree and the province of Verona for providing
the Nativity scene.
The band of the Vatican Gendarmeria police force played
Christmas hymns together with musicians from the two regions
while the strains of Nabucco were played for the unveiling of
the nativity scene and the popular song Calabrisella was
rendered for the illumination of the Silver Fir.
Cardinal Angelo Comastri, the archpriest of the Basilica of
St Peter's, climaxed the dazzling ceremonies by switching on the
LEd lighting on the facade of the largest church in the world
with a click of an ipad.
