Pope Francis on Friday
said unity was Christian but warned that uniformity was not.
"Uniformity is not Catholic. It is not Christian," said the
pope during a speech to the Catholic Fraternity in Vatican City.
"The Holy Spirit makes both unity and diversity. This is
curious, but it is this way," the pontiff continued.
"In today's Gospel passage we have read at mass, there was
this uniformity of these men, attached to the letter. One should
not do so to such a point that a gentleman had to ask, 'But can
you can do good on Saturdays or can you not?' This is the danger
of uniformity," said the pope.
