Pope Francis on Wednesday
praised an elderly woman he said refused to gossip because "she
recognized the image of God in one another".
Such kindness and faith from a woman who worked hard for
her parish was worthy of "canonization" as a saint, the pope
added during comments to a crowd that filled St. Peter's Square
during the pontiff's weekly general audience.
Vatican Radio estimated as many as 10,000 people crowded
together to hear Francis, whose regular Wednesday audiences were
disrupted during the summer, with some being moved indoors.
The pope said he cited the example of the elderly woman to
demonstrate the importance of unity and forgiveness "for the
times when we have given rise to division or misunderstanding in
our communities".
"May our relationships mirror more beautifully and joyfully
the unity of Jesus and the Father," said Francis.
