Universiade: regatta for young detainees

'Scugnizzi a Vela' inaugurates Mini-Universiade

(ANSA) - Naples, May 24 - A few days prior to the beginning of the Summer Universiade 2019 in Naples and the Campania region, youths from city outskirts will be taking part in the Summer Mini-Universiade.
The initiative is backed by Campania regional governor Vincenzo De Luca and implemented by the in-house company SCABEC to get youths from city outskirts as well as minors in social rehabilitation and training activities involved. The project kicked off on Monday with the "Scugnizzi a Vela" regatta, which left Naples' Acton dock towards the Gulf of Salerno. Onboard are youths that are in a trial period after being sentenced for serious crimes such as attempted homicide, robbery, and drug dealing. The youths worked onboard the Bliss educational sailboat, which was seized after being used for the crime of clandestine migration and entrusted to the juvenile justice system by the Mestieri del Mare ('Sea Trades'') integration project.
The 'Scugnizzi a Vela' project involves youths from the Nisida juvenile center and the Aquilotto, Germoglio, Girasole and Traguardo community lodgings and was organised in collaboration with the Navy, the Juvenile Justice Centre of Campania, the port authorities, the Naples town council, and metropolitan authorities.
Monday's regatta also kicked off other activities in four outskirts of Naples, Caserta, and Salerno.
The areas were chosen by parishes already active in promoting sports and in providing entertainment and training for children between the ages of 5 and 14. For Barra and San Giovanni, the Naples CSI sports center was also involved, which will be tasked with all the sports activities to be held in these areas including the torch-lit procession on June 28, with the participation of torchbearers from the Universiade. There will be basketball, table tennis, water games, beach volleyball, street basketball, archery, and dodgeball until July 13.
A stand in collaboration with the local health authority and the regional schools directorate will be set up at the same time to promote healthy lifestyles among the young.
