Italy goalkeeping great Dino
Zoff on Tuesday called Gordon Banks, the legendary England
goalie who has died at the age of 81, "my idol when I was
young".
Zoff, who captained Italy to the World Cup in 1982, said of
1966 World Cup winner Banks that "I learned of his death with
great sadness.
"For me he was one of the greatest goalkeepers of all, I have
seen few like him between the posts".
Zoff, who went on to manage Italy to second place at Euro
2000, said Banks' World Cup win and his "mythical" wonder save
against Brazil great Pelé at the 1970 World Cup would both
"remain unforgettable".
Pelè said the save was "the best ever" while Argentina great
Diego Maradona said "a legend has left us".
