Italian Antonio Giovinazzi will
race for Alfa Romeo Sauber next season, the Formula One team
said on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old will be in the same team as 2007 world
champion Kimi Räikkönen, who is leaving Ferrari.
He was a test driver for Sauber and replaced Pascal Wehrlein
at two grands prix in 2017.
There have not been any Italian drivers with a regular slot
in Formula One since Jarno Trulli and Vitantonio Liuzzi in 2011.
Giovinazzi, born on December 1993, was the 2015 FIA Formula 3
European Championship runner-up and raced with Prema in the 2016
International GP2 Series, again finishing runner-up with five
wins and eight overall podiums.
He was chosen by Ferrari as their third and reserve driver
for the 2017 season.
He made his Formula One Grand Prix debut for Sauber at the
2017 Australian Grand Prix, replacing Pascal Wehrlein.
He also replaced Wehrlein at the following Chinese Grand Prix
as Wehrlein continued his recovery
