FIFA said Friday it would trial a
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the first time in Italy's
friendly with France in Bari on September 1. It said it would be
a "special test" in which the VAR "will be able to communicate
with the referee during the match, but will not have an impact
on the play as in a direct test". So far VARS have been tested
in dry runs without being able to communicate with the ref. VARs
will be used, if approved for game-changing decisions like
goals, red cards, penalties and mistaken identities.
