An Algerian pair of Siamese twins
joined at the abdomen and chest have been separated thanks to an
extraordinary operation at Rome's Bambino Gesù pediatric
hospital, sources said Thursday.
The 17-month-old children underwent the surgery on October 7
and they are both well.
The operation took 10 hours, with five different teams
alternating for a total of 40 health personnel.
It is the second such operation for the Vatican-owned
hospital and is one of very few cases of Siamese twins being
separated in Italy.
