The waters of Venice's canals
are rife with man-made fragrances found in soap and shampoo
whose environmental impact is unknown, researchers said Tuesday.
Scientists from Ca' Foscari University and Italy's National
Research Council (CNR) conducted a study in April-December 2015,
using water samples from 22 locations in the historic center of
Venice, Burano Island, and two spots on the northern shore of
the lagoon enclosing the city.
They found 17 different fragrances that are commonly used
in the cosmetics industry. Little is known about their impact on
the environment, the authors of the study said.
