Eating disorders such as
anorexia and bulimia as well as general malnutrition can change
one's very genes, research by health authorities in the Italian
region of Umbria showed on Tuesday.
The study on the correlation between eating disorders and
DNA involved 349 anorexia or bulimia patients between the ages
of 12 and 50.
The research showed that environment and specific
nutritional behaviours can influence the way certain genes are
expressed.
This suggests that an intervention on the nutritional and
psychological side could ease the symptoms of the condition, the
research showed.
