Italy has picked its three entries to the European Union Contest for Young Scientists to take place September 17-22 at the Expo 2015 world's fair in Milan, sources said Monday.
These are BopHIS, a buoy that monitors coastal water pH developed by Thomas Alt, Alessandro Roccaforte and Sofia Srebotuyak at the Arturo Malignani technical high school in the northeastern city of Udine.
Metals-Catchers, which uses the pectin in fruit and vegetable peels to clean up water contaminated with heavy metals, developed by Alvaro Maggio from the Quinto Ennio scientific high school in the town of Gallipoli, in the southern Puglia region; and iBin, a "smart" recycling trash can aimed at the elderly and disabled, developed by Davide Carboni and Alessandro Carra from Volterra Elia high school in the city of Ancona, in the central Marche region.
A jury of experts from universities, polytechnics and research institutes chose the three finalists out of 65 projects by 143 students aged 14-21 from all over Italy.
