Feltre's 41st Palio commemorates Venice protectorate

Three days of competitions, celebrations with horse race

VENEZIA ANSAcom

Feltre's 2019 Palio will be commemorating during the first week of August an event that occurred on June 15, 1404, when Feltre became part of the protectorate of the Republic of Venice. The Palio has been commemorating this important chapter in the city's history every year since 1979.

Antonio Cambruzzi wrote in the second volume of his History of Feltre that the local population celebrated being under the "glorious domain of the Venetian Republic" for days "and wanted to make the memory of such a happy success eternal, commanding by public decree that each year in future the 15th of June would be solemnly celebrated with the procession of all orders of the city" and with a Palio horse race. Celebrations were scheduled on August 2-4 so the city could once again experience its history.

The presentation of the event this year is scheduled on Saturday, July 27, in Piazza Maggiore. It will be followed by evening celebrations in the city's districts on July 31 and then events in the city center's main squares followed by dinner on Friday, August 2. Historic parades have been organized on August 3, along with a ceremony commemorating the city's handover by Feltre native Vittorio Muffoni to Venetian Bartolomeo Nani. Archery competitions and relay races will start, followed by an exhibition of the historic group of flag-wavers, which has been performing since 1983, and fireworks to wrap up the evening.

The following day will start with a morning mass to bless the horses and the flag of the Palio with an original prize of 15 gold 'ducati'. A historic parade with participants dressed in costumes to represent the local aristocrats and the community will follow after 3:30 AM, from Campo Giorgio to Pra' del Moro, where the last two competitions will take place - archery and a horse race. The city' s four historic districts - Castello, Port'Oria, Santo Stefano and Duomo - will compete to the beat of drummers and clarions until the winner of the 41st Palio of Feltre will be officially announced and awarded the banner made by Nunzio Gorza. The Palio, said the president of the Association Palio di Feltre, Eugenio Tamburrino, "isn't merely a competition or a historic commemoration but a period of the year during which each one of us rediscovers part of the community, although society is increasingly going in the opposite direction". "This is why the Palio is a common heritage that must not be lost and this is the secret of the show that the event is able to offer to everyone, citizens and visitors - a show that we can't wait to share the highest number of people".
