A night in the forest of Cansiglio, at the beginning of fall, offers the possibility of listening to the sounds of the woods.
Visitors can observe up close splendid stags and listen to their loud bellowing - love calls accompanying their ritual of courtship between the end of September and the beginning of October.
The initiative is organized by the tourism consortium 'Consorzio Turistico Alpago e Cansiglio'.
It includes a brief lesson on the biology and behavior of deer and then a visit to the woods to listen to the bellowing of lovesick stags.
The evening will wrap up with a typical dinner at a farm, with the possibility of spending the night there, and then enjoying another expedition at dawn to observe the bellowing stags.
The millennial forest, which provided the wood to make the oars of Venice's boats, ranks first together with the Stelvio national park for the highest concentration of deer.
According to recent estimates, over 3,000 deer live in the forest, including many stags, creatures that can easily weigh up to 200 kilos and that have imposing horns.
When the night falls, hundreds of stags begin their ''concert''.
Hikers who most appreciate wilderness can admire stags and their rituals also from the upland of Erera Brendol, in the heart of the national park of the Dolomites in the area of Belluno, between the municipalities of Cesiomaggiore and Gosaldo.
They can also walk along the stream of Cordevole, in the area of Candaten, the door to the 'Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi'.
The area of Agordino can also be an ideal destination to listen to the bellowing stags, in the woods between Falcade and Vallada or the grassy slopes around the town of Livinallongo del Col di Lana.
