Tax dodging is "really
indecent", President Sergio Mattarella told students on
International Anti-Corruption Day Monday.
Mattarella stressed that taxes funded "common services, and
common life", which were regulated by public spending.
"If I duck my duty as taxpayer I'm exploiting what the others
pay, with the taxes they pay," he said.
Mattarella said "the problem is one of norms, interventions,
controls, checks, which are producing some results, but above
all one of culture and mentality".
Tax evasion in Italy runs into the hundreds of billions of
euros a year.
