Firefighters on Monday removed a
banner hanging outside a private apartment protesting against a
visit to the northern town of Brembate, near Bergamo, by Deputy
Premier and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.
The removal of the banner, which told the League leader
"you're not welcome", caused controversy.
"This morning Salvini was speaking at a party initiative in
Brembate. A lady hung a banner out of her window," Bergamo Mayor
Giorgio Gori, a member of the opposition, centre-left Democratic
Party (PD), said via Twitter.
"A little later the banner was removed by fire fighters.
"I ask: who gave the order to intervene? On what basis?".
The section for fire fighters of the CGIL trade union was
critical too.
"This is not a job for fire fighters," it said.
"What happened in Brembate, in the province of Bergamo, just
before Interior Minister Matteo Salvini arrived is unacceptable.
"You cannot take a fire brigade unit away from its daily work
to force it to remove a banner".
